General Criteria
The Majaz Competition tends to select projects that respect their context, whether environmental, natural, geographical, political, social, or historical. Competing proposals must offer a solution to an environmental problem surrounding the site, respond effectively to the site's historical or heritage significance, propose a practical solution to a functional problem within the project area, present an innovative understanding of a social or behavioral issue, use local or natural materials in an innovative way, or incorporate several similar aspects.
Majaz also encourages students to consider the broader context and not overlook global issues affecting the surrounding environment. Energy efficiency, respect for natural resources, reduced consumption, and commitment to sustainability principles are fundamental values that contemporary architecture should observe.
Submitted architectural projects must include a clear functional solution and constitute complete architectural works, with plans, sections, and perspectives from multiple angles. The competition encourages formal creativity and promotes the development of forms that are not only visually striking, but also reflect society, geography, and culture. Competing projects should place the human being at the heart of architectural solutions, ensuring that human comfort, the provision of a unique experience within the building, and the preservation of human dignity are essential elements of any architectural concept.
Most architecture departments in Iraq are part of engineering colleges, and graduates must embody the values, skills, and competencies cultivated in engineering colleges. These include logical thinking, a clear design methodology, clarity of objectives, definition of goals and problem-solving approaches, and more. These ideals should be evident in any winning proposal.
Students must also demonstrate seriousness and diligence in their projects. For Majaz, a complete project that demonstrates commitment, dedication, attention to detail, and integrity is preferable to a creative work that lacks detail or shows deficiency.
